How to Live Free of Shame, Guilt, and Condemnation

How to Live Free of Shame, Guilt, and Condemnation

About

Hello and welcome to the Creative Force Podcast! In this episode I sit down with Colleen Iammarino, founder of Monday Morning Ministry and author of the Monday Morning Devotional. Colleen opens up about her powerful personal testimony, from a chaotic childhood and becoming a mother at a very young age, to finding Jesus. She unpacks the difference between shame, guilt, and condemnation, why so many believers still struggle with these things after salvation, and how understanding the grace of God and your identity in Christ is what truly sets you free. This episode is packed with scripture! If you have ever felt like God is angry at you, this episode is for you.

My Takeaways

Shame says I am bad (identity). Guilt says I did something bad (behavior). Condemnation says I am guilty and there is no way out (verdict). But the finished work of the cross answers all three.

The enemy's job description is to steal, kill, and destroy. He entices you into sin and then turns around and condemns you for it. Once you see the pattern you can stop falling for it.

Grace is not just for salvation. The grace of God is what God did through Christ before you could do anything good or bad. Faith is simply your response of saying thank you, I receive that.

God already knew every mistake you were going to make the moment you said yes to him. He is not surprised by your failures and he is not keeping a record.

Christians often think God's forgiveness covers pre-salvation sin but that they must earn their way back after salvation. This is works based thinking and contradicts the Word of God.

You are a spirit. You have a soul (mind, will, emotions, intellect). You live in a body. Your spirit was made brand new at salvation. Your soul and body have to be renewed through the Word. Understanding spirit, soul, and body is key to walking in freedom.

Ephesians 4:22-24 is a blueprint for changing identities. Put off the old man (former way of thinking and living), be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man created in true righteousness and holiness.

Condemnation comes from the enemy and from ourselves. It does not come from God. Jesus said he did not come to condemn the world but to save it.

When we refuse to forgive ourselves we are essentially telling God his sacrifice was not enough. God remembers our sins no more. Who are we to hold onto what he has already released?

Everything starts with a thought. A thought leads to an emotion and an emotion leads to an action. This is why taking thoughts captive is so critical to walking free from shame and condemnation.

You were created for God's pleasure. When you walk in what he says about you it brings him joy. Living in guilt and condemnation does not bring God pleasure. Standing up in your identity does.

Start planting God's thoughts about you in your mind and meditating on them instead of the lies. When your thoughts shift your emotions shift. When your emotions shift everything changes.
