Hi! Welcome to the Creative Force podcast. This week I speak to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith on the important topic of stopping burnout in our lives. Dr. Saundra is a physician, speaker, and an award-winning author including her book Sacred Rest. In this episode, she shares the 7 different types of rest that exist, how to find out which ones you are deficient in, and restorative practices to recover your energy.

Burnout: a state of physical and emotional exhaustion.

A sign of burn-out can be experiencing no joy in your everyday life and feeling overwhelmed.

There is an active component to rest, not just stopping, but pouring back in.

7 Types of Rest:

  1. Physical
  2. Mental
  3. Spiritual
  4. Emotional
  5. Social
  6. Sensory
  7. Creative

Studies have shown that bodies of water (even pictures!) can provide creative rest.

You can’t wait to rest until the work is done because the work is never done.

Activity does not mean productivity.

Take a step back periodically and determine is my busyness leading me to the life I want?  

Pick the one area where you have the highest deficit and start working on that area first.

You already have habits built into your day what are restorative practices you can layer into that?

A well-rested life provides boundaries, reflection, communication, freedom, and more.

  1. Identify what type of rest you need.
  2. Pick one intentional activity or restorative practice to try.
  3. Be an advocate for rest.
